Service Description

6 classes: Mondays 2/26, 3/4, 3/11, 3/18, 3/25, skip a week for drying and first firing, final class for glazing on 4/8. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate makeups, but will work with you to provide any missed instruction. This class follows the Skills 201 class. But Skills 201 is not a pre-requisite. Anyone can register for this class if they have advanced beginner skill level. This would be equivalent to having taken the Intro to Pottery Wheel class and 1-2 six week pottery wheel sessions at our studio, or equivalent experience from other learning environments. Students should have their own tools. Please bring your own hand towel (aprons optional). Fingernails should be kept short. In this exciting progressive series of wheel classes, students will build cumulative skills on the pottery wheel, as well as exploring surface treatments and general studio knowledge. The following is a summary of the different levels of this progressive series: Intro- our 3 week Intro to Pottery Wheel class which introduces those new to the pottery wheel to the basic steps to creating pots on the wheel, as well as trimming and glazing. 101- this class builds on the basic skills learned in the intro class through further instruction, demos and practice. Focus will be on becoming proficient with forms- cylinder, bowl and plates. 201- mugs with handles, different bowl making techniques and how to make covered jars. 301- now that you have some confidence at the wheel, push your skills further by refining mugs with handles, faceted pots/surface textures, and bottles/flasks. More possibilities for surface treatments will be introduced. 401- attention to detail will be stressed as you create matching sets, pitchers made from taller cylinders and sodium silicate pots. 501-Explore the possibilities beyond the basic pot as you experiment with altered forms through darts, oval forms and additions. 601-teapots and cups, nesting bowls, lidded vessels 701- assess your skills, define your goals and plan your own agenda of projects in this class which will also dive into essentials of studio practice. Please read our procedures and policies. By registering for a class you acknowledge and agree to our policies and procedures. We are located on the third floor of a historic building in downtown Newark. Unfortunately we are not handicap accessible.
